Gellgi
Welsh Staghound, Welsh Buckhound, Dunne Hounde
Dunne Hounde from Booke of Hunting, Turberville (1576) |
A large reddish brown hound used for deer hunting, quite possibly a similar breed to the now extinct Grand Fauve de Bretagne as large numbers of people moved from Wales to Brittany from the fifth to the seventh century A.D. This breed may well have doubled as a wolfhound with the lighter, faster Milgi being used to tire out, overhaul and delay the wolf and the Gellgi (pl. Gellgwn) catching up to finish the kill.
